Abby Richter is a TV producer from Sacramento. She is attractive, smart, creative and well-organized, but she is still lonely and her news program lose the audience. Her only partner is a cat who is trying to help Abby to find a partner. One day he switched on the TV remote to “The Ugly Truth” show, where she saw Mike Chadway (arrogant and crass sexist) for a first time.
Next day she discovered, that her boss has hired Mike Chadway to improve the program ratings. Mike and his opinions were disgusting and stupid for Abby, but not for the audience. Abby dreamed about ideal man who is handsome, intelligent, who likes cats and drinks wine. She decided to fight against Mike, till she realized that maybe he has right by saying that “Men are simple”.
Cat also helped Abby to meet a handsome neighbor called Colin. Colin seemed to be an ideal candidate for a partner, because he was a surgeon who likes cats. Abby wanted to pick up neighbor, but she doesn’t know how. Mike helped her with that, by teaching her how to behave and dress to become attractive.
Abby’s TV show with Mike had became more and more popular, and she became more satisfied and happier by having a relationship with Colin. Everything went perfect, till the moment when Abby was planning a romantic weekend with Colin. Her boss suddenly has forced her then to cancel plans, and to make business travel with Mike. At the beginning she was angry, but then they went for drinks and dancing, and they got to know each other closer, maybe a little bit too close…
This film is about differences between genders – their ways of seeing the world and hierarchy of their needs. For men the most important thing to start a new relationship is physicality. While for women, more important is intelligence than man’s ass.
The film shows that it is easy to learn, how to behave to be attractive to opposite sex, but the question is, if pretending is really a good way of building relationship? Knowledge about human needs and wants is useful to start relationship, but we cannot build a strong feeling based on pretences. Appearance is misleading!
On the other hand, it is important not to close in a trap of imagination – to look for an ideal, imaginated partner. There is no ideal person on the world. The world is fantastic and interesting, just because people are different. Living with a person, who likes exactly the same things as we are would be extremely boring.
Human is maybe smarter than any other life creatures, but still he also has to listen to the voice of nature. That means, that we do not always do what we supposed to, but that what our body wants. And this is the ugly truth about humanity.
“The Ugly Truth” is not a classical romantic comedy – there is a lot of funny situations, but not enough romantics. The film is really direct with humor similar to “American Pie”, but not so intensive and predictable. Personally I do not like that kind of films, but I have to admit that I have watched “The Ugly Truth” with a great pleasure. It was far better than I though and gave me a lot of fun. The story was sometimes ugly and sexist but (unfortunately) truth.
